If you can remember back to the original episodes of "Saturday Night Live", Gilda Radner had this character on the Weekend Update segment named Roseanne Rosannnadanna who always used to preface her comments with "It's always somethin'!" Well, of late, that's about the way I have been feeling. Life goes merrily on, day to day, and then whammo, out of the blue, something unexpected comes along and throws a curveball at you. In this case, I now find out that, as a result of the workouts I've been doing, I've somehow managed to come down with Achilles tendonitis of my right foot. Oh, I knew it hurt like hell, especially a day or two after workouts, and yes, I probably should have been icing and stretching it all along (even though, when I did try the stretches, they hurt like hell, but then, I suspect that they are supposed to), but when I went to the orthopaedist yesterday, mainly just to get a standing prescription for my 1½" shoe lifts so I don't have to jump through so many hoops just to get my shoes altered, I told him that, yeah, I'd been having a few problems with my right foot of late and maybe he could take a look at it for me. Well, he ran his hand up and down where I pointed out where it hurt, and when he pinched a certain spot, I howled in pain - yes, that is exactly where it hurts, and I occasionally take some Tylenol to ease the pain, but I'm not keen on taking pain meds to begin with so I rarely do so. I usually just put up with it and go on with my life as usual. So he did some X-rays (geez, wonder how much that's going to cost, because my insurance no longer pays for any diagnostic testing!) and I found out that I have some kind of weird congential problem with my foot. It's always turned severely outward when I stand barefoot and it's always driven me crazy as a result, especially during T'ai Chi, but I didn't know that it was some kind of problem with the way things are formed. So now I have to get a special orthotic to wear inside of my right shoe, which I have to go back on Monday to have fitted (and once again, insurance won't pay for it.....sigh......). Then next Wednesday I have to be shipped back to physical therapy for a few weeks of ultrasound because my doctor said it looked really red and inflamed and could probably benefit from some ultrasound treatment. On top of that, I'm going to have to slow down my workout regimen, so I think that I will go once a week instead of twice a week as I have been. I don't want to give it up altogether, but the women's fitness class is a lot less intensive than the speed & agility class, so I think I will limit myself to just the Tuesday night stuff for a while. It will save me money besides, which can't hurt. I'll need the extra cash to pay the mounting medical bills that this is sure to incur for me. What a shame that people are so afraid of socialized medicine and universal health care that we have such a broken system that won't get fixed anytime soon.
