Welcome, 2010!

The new year is here, and I hope that in many ways it is a far better one than the one we just left behind. It seems that 2009 can be labeled "The Year of Stupidity", when human behavior fell to all time lows of utter ridiculousness. I hope that in this new year, people act with more circumspection and common sense than they did this past year. Honestly, if you were at all aware of what was going on this past year, you'd really begin to wonder to what depths people have sunk in their behavior. Maybe it was the economy, maybe it was a level of desperation we have never seen in modern times that caused people to act with such utter stupidity. I just hope that the economy improves this year just a bit to where we won't hear of such follies as Balloon Boy and the White House Party Crashers and other reality show seekers doing outrageous things that create wall to wall news coverage that plays into the fame that these people are seeking. At any rate, let's hope for improved behavior this year and an end to the non-stop follies that 2009 brought us. I have to think that things must get better in this new year. This past year started out on such a high note of hope and optimism with the inauguration of President Obama. We were all so grateful to finally be rid of Bush and thrilled with the transformational idea of our first black President. There was such a wave of idealism that we could get this country back on track from the damage done by the Bush/Cheney cabal, but the cold hard reality is that it's going to take years, maybe at least a decade, to repair the damage done. The problem is that a lot of people wanted immediate change and are disappointed with the incremental steps that Obama is taking to fix things and to foment change. I admit that I find myself on occasion being one of those people who finds myself feeling disappointed as well, but I have to bring myself back to reality and to understand that the damage done took years to do and will take years to repair. We aren't going to see immediate and transformational change. It's going to take a lot of patience on our part to let President Obama do what needs to be done to get things back on track and I'm galled that people are being so harsh and critical of our President who inherited two wars and an economy in ruins. He hasn't even been in office a year and people are already trying to throw up obstacles in his way to prevent him from forwarding his agenda. It's frustrating to see how bitter, partisan and divided this country has become and how hard it is for the President to get anything accomplished as a result. Candidate Obama hoped to change the tone of Washington to one of more bipartisan cooperation. President Obama has found out that such a thing is not possible in the era in which we live right now. And that doesn't bode well for the coming years ahead. All I can hope for is that this next year will be a far better one than the one we just left behind in the trash heap of history, which, aside from the Obama inauguration, deserves to be left there.
